Decode the mysterious art of mixing.
The mixing process can feel mysterious and difficult for many producers. We’re often told to use techniques like EQ and compression, but we're not given much explanation beyond that.
While there are many useful online tutorials that cover specific techniques, these are useless without first understanding the basic principles behind every mixing decision you make.
An Elemental Approach
This course takes a fundamental approach, breaking the process down to three foundational elements:
Space, Motion, and Color.
As we approach each part of the mixing process step-by-step, you’ll learn to apply and master these three elements in your mixes, creating powerful tracks with clarity and depth.
Space
The balance and clarity of your mix depends on the volume and the interaction between frequencies of the tracks in your mix.
You’ll master the element of Space by gaining a thorough understanding of volume, pan, EQ, and how the three tools interact with each other.
Motion
The interaction of dynamics between instruments is crucial to any mix, whether it’s a loud, punchy metal track, or a calm acoustic piece.
To master Motion, we’ll dive deep into tools like Compressors, Limiters, and Automation to give your mixes the structure and momentum they deserve.
Color
Beginner mixes can sound dull, flat, and without "life" or Color.
We'll learn to use tools like saturation, modulation effects, and spatial tools like reverb and delay to create unforgettable mixes with depth and character.
